Depart Miami on late night flight to Lima, Peru.   Arrive in Lima and connect on Lan Peru domestic flight to Cusco.  Check into hotel.

Friday, 10/24/2008

Explore Cusco:   Go on a guided sightseeing tour of Cusco taking in the colonial churches and visiting Inca ruins outside the city; Sacsayhuaman (temple of the Lightning), Qengo (ceremonial place, Pucapucara (Inca Fortress) and Tambomachay (Temple of the Water).  Lunch and dinner on your own.

Explore Cusco:   Breakfast included.  Free day in Cusco to partake in one of the numerous adventure tours at additional cost (horseback riding, white water rafting, mountain biking) or just take the time to explore on your own.  Lunch and dinner on your own.

 

Trekking Option - Cusco - Calca - Aguas Termales Lares - Huacawasi:   Depart Cusco to Pisac to proceed directly to the ruins before returning for a short stop at Pisac and its famous market.  We will then continue on to Lares, Optional Hot Springs and enjoy some time soaking in the medicinal hot springs, after lunch we have four hours of trekking to our campsite above Huacawasi.

Non-Trekking Option - Pisac Ruins and Market:   This excursion takes you through the Urubamba Valley to the colorful Indian market of Pisac.  Also visit a Llama farm and learn about traditional weaving techniques of Peru.

Huacawasi - Epsaycocha:  After continuing up through the valley, arrive in the community of Huacawasi.  We then begin climbing up to Condor Pass, where we catch a stunning view of the renowned Mount Veronica.  Descending gently for one hour, we come to the beautiful Epsaycocha Lake, and our last campsite. 

Non-trekking option - Moray and Salt Mines - Ollantaytambo:  The Moray provides one of the most spectacular views of the Urubamba Mountain range.  We do a small hike down the Salt mines to visit the local salt co-operative.  Lunch and dinner on your own.

Epsaycocha - Huilloq - Pumamarka - Ollantaytambo - Aguas Calientes: - Today, our trail leads downhill to an overlook facing a wide valley.  We eventually arrive to the administrative Pumamarka Inca site and enjoy our guided tour.  We continue to hike for an hour and a half to arrive Ollantaytambo.  This Inca fortress is situated in a fertile river valley and sheltered by mammoth mountains, this ancient Inca village is considered one of the most important living museums in the world.  Take a train to Aguas Calientes adn spend the night in a hotel.

Non-Trekking option - Aguas Calientes:  Morning train to Aguas Calientes. Afternoon on your own to explore the Machu Picchu Museum near Aguas Calientes, day hikes available, markets and shopping, or just relax at the hot springs.

Machu Picchu - Cusco:    Breakfast included.  Take an early morning bus up to Machu Picchu.  Spend 6-7 hours exploring this unique archaeological site.  You can climb Huaynapicchu for an unparalleled view of the lost city of the Incas.  Lunch and dinner on your own.

Return to Lima: Late morning flight to Lima, transfer to hotel.  Optional tour - visit Colonial Lima and the Catacombs.  Farewell dinner in Lima.
